Make America Paint Again

So, many of you who know me see a post of Jesus guiding Trump’s hand and you think, “He’s lost it. He’s finally lost it. He’s finally went off the deep end, I don’t even…”

Or, rather: “Sweet Lord, no. Oh, heavenly buffaloes (free advertising, pay me), for the love of all that’s good and decent….DO NOT POST A PAINTING OF JESUS GUIDING TRUMP’S STRANGELY FLESH-COLORED EXECUTIVE ORDER-SIGNING PEN, even if it is funny that the intermingled hands do look a little like a Beetlejuice noir-art inspired Triceratops (Michael Keaton and Michael Crichton, free and relevant advertising, pay me).

Triceratops joke aside, my primary problem with this image is threefold (at least to start):

“All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” -John 14:25-27

a) The Holy Spirit remains with us, not miracle phantom Jesus. Jesus is a little busy preparing the kingdom, as Jesus promised he would do. The indwelling Holy Spirit is what guides us. By all scriptural accounts the Spirit is never revealed to have the image of a human, at least in my limited knowledge. The Spirit is revealed as: tongues of fire, a dove, wind, and water, but never a human. Granted, the Holy Spirit has the same dominion as God, so I can’t possibly, ever even pretend to predict what the Holy Spirit would do. Let’s just say if I were a betting man, I can’t imagine the Spirit would come onto the scene looking exactly like Jesus. God understands how easily confused people get, and God’s probably going to cut us some slack on that one. Why does this image of Jesus in the picture trouble me? We continually fail to acknowledge the role of the Holy Spirit, the counselor promised to us, working in our lives. This first point isn’t about Trump, it’s about our tragic neglect of the Holy Spirit. As a rule, most denominations are Trinitarian but you wouldn’t know it by listening to all of our “God, God, God” and “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus” sermons so prevalent in the church week after week. That’s also a big reason I, in my personal experience with the church, believe mainline American Christianity is weak right now. It’s also why I believe we don’t see very many straight up New Testament style miracles. Our closest connection to God, the counselor that God promises will dwell within God’s believers, the Holy Spirit, we all but ignore. You know when you watch a rom-com and the girl (or guy) falls in love with the nerdy best friend that’s been there the whole time, but only at the very end of the movie after dating a series of hapless jerks? That’s what we do to the Holy Spirit on a regular basis. The Spirit is right here with us, and we just totally ignore the Spirit.

b) I don’t believe there is any possible chance DJT is currently operating in the Spirit. Correction, “I do not believe” is too soft. Let me phrase this more bigly and such: There is literally no possible way, whatsoever, that Donald J. Trump is operating in the Holy Spirit at this present time. I’m not seeing any of the fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. You either have all, or none. Grape vines produce grapes, apple trees produce apples, orange trees produce oranges. Have you ever seen a fruit tree that can selectively grow different fruits depending on the season? (P.S., props to Dr. Turner for that analogy) You either got em, or you don’t. You don’t get a banana from an orange tree and you don’t get an orange from a banana plant. If you could, Dole (Wal-Mart, pay me) would save a lot of money.

c) My third point is much simpler: this is a *weird* image that’s borderline, if not totally, blasphemous…and creepy. Really creepy. Many people want to elevate DJT to demi-God-like status or claim that he is America’s anointed one, and I, as a Christian, fail to see that as a possibility Good leader? Bad leader? We’ll find out, but definitely not the messianic figure many are making him out to be right now.

Christians, whether you like Trump or not, let’s come to the table together and have a little come-to-Jesus moment. Trump is not operating in the Spirit. I brought this up on the forum post where I saw this picture, and the person who posted this image said, “How can you assure me that none of Trump’s ideas will be inspired by God. God can inspire who [God] wishes, from Pharaoh to David, and so-forth, even today. Why wouldn’t God do the same through Trump?” To which, my only response was, “God also inspired Nebuchadnezzar to whip the crap out of Israel and send them into exile. But, we like to forget about those kinds of God-inspired rulers, don’t we? Look, God can use anybody, but God’s purpose isn’t always as pretty as our plan.”

So, that being said. Let’s stop with the creepy Jesus/Trump paintings, kthxbai?
